Narration means the action or process of narrating a sentence, passage or story. যে কোনো ভাষার মতই English Language এ  কোন  Message, Speech, Comments বা Request প্রভৃতিকে  দুই-ভাবে ব্যক্ত করা হয়। Direct Speech  -এ   ও Indirect Speech –এ যাকে আমরা ইংরেজীতে Narration Change বলি।

  • John says to me, “I shall go to Kolkata.”

উপরোক্ত বাক্যে John এর কথাটি কোন পরিবর্তন না করে Inverted Comma (‘) – এর মধ্যে রেখে ব্যক্ত করা হয়েছে। তাই এটি Direct Speech.

  • When a speech is quoted in the actual words used by the speaker, it is called the Direct Narration.

যে উক্তিতে বক্তার কথা অবিকল ব্যক্ত করা থাকে , তাকে Direct Narration বলে।

  • John tells me that he will go to Kolkata.

উপরোক্ত বাক্যে John  এর কথাটি পরিবর্তন করে নিজের মতো ব্যক্ত করা হয়েছে। তাই এটি Indirect Speech. এক্ষেত্রে  Inverted comma টি তুলে দিতে হয়।

  • When the speech is reported in the form of a narrative giving the substance or meaning of the words used by the speaker, without quoting his actual words, it is called the indirect speech.

যখন কোনো বক্তার কথা নিজের ভাষায় বলা হয় তখন তাকে Indirect speech বলে।

Interrogative Sentence টি যদি Wh word দিয়ে আরম্ভ হলে, সেই Wh word টিই (who, when, whom, whose, how, what etc) linker হিসাবে ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

Linker ব্যাবহারের পর Interrogative Sentence এর Form/Structure টি Assertive Sentence এর Structure/Form এ পরিনত করতে হয়। অর্থাৎ Linker (If/Wh-Word)+Sub+V+Other.Do/does/did-Indefinite Tense এ প্রশ্ন করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাই Indirect Speech এ Do Verb টি তুলে দিতে হয়।
