WORD => PHRASE => CLAUSE => SENTENCE
A group of words carrying complete sense is called sentence. It may be contained with subject, verb, object, complement, phrase, clause etc. Let’s see the words in each group under the given sentences stand together and make some senses.

The boy with a red cap on his head is John. – Underline করা শব্দগুচ্ছে Finite Verb নেই এবং এগুলি একত্রে আংশিক অর্থ প্রকাশ করছে। 3. The boy wearing a red cap on his head is my brother. – Underline করা শব্দগুচ্ছে Non Finite Verb (wearing) আছে এবং এগুলি একত্রে আংশিক অর্থ প্রকাশ করছে। 4. PHRASE
Phrase: A phrase is a small group of words that forms a meaningful unit within a clause.
Phrase:Phrase হল বাক্য মধ্যস্থ একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যা আংশিকভাব প্রকাশ করে, কিন্ত Phrase এ কোনো Subject বা Finite Verb থাকে না। এটি Parts of Speech রূপে Clause বা Sentence –এ অবস্থান করে। The boys are running to and fro. I have a golden watch.
It may function as a noun, as adjective or as an adverb in a sentence. উদাহরণ:-The secret of his success is hardwork. (as subject of the verb – is) The teacher puished all the boy in the class. (as object of the verb – punished) She was full of hope. (as complement of the verb – was)
Phrase প্রধানত পাঁচ প্রকার:
Noun Phrase
A noun phrase is built around a single noun. –এই Phrase Noun –এর মতো কাজ করে।
He is a man of high rank. I do not know how to swim. Today is my birthday. Bengali is our mother tongue.
Death-bed = মৃত্যুশয্যা, Body-guard = দেহরক্ষী, Battle-drum = রণবাদ্য, See-voyage = সমুদ্রযাত্রী, Sense of duty, Key to success, faith in god, man of might, a lock of hair, untimely death, angry book, sad conjugal life, virtue or vice.

Adjective Phrase
An adjective phrase is built around an adjectives –এই Phrase Noun –এর দোষ, গুন, অবস্থান প্রভৃতিকে qualify করে, অর্থাৎ এটি Adjective –এর মতো কাজ করে।
Rambabu leads a very interesting life. A man devoted to his duties is loved by all.
My father is all in all in our house. I am out of sorts today. The boy working in the field is my brother. অনুরূপভাবে

Adverbial phrase
An adverbial phrase is built around an adverb. –এটি Phrase Adverb –এর মতো কাজ করে, অর্থাৎ এটি স্থান, সময়, প্রকার, পরিমাণ ইত্যাদি নির্দেশ করে।
A beggar is begging from door to door. John disobeyed my order again and again.
Dipankar tried heart and soul for success. The economy recovered very slowly.

Verbal Phrase
A verbal phrase is the verbal part of a clause –এটি Verb –এর মতো কাজ করে। যেমন- Be-verb, Have-verb ইত্যাদি। Am, is, are, have, has, shall, may, to be, had better, would rather প্রভৃতি।
I will be going to college next year. He always finds fault with others.
Prepositional phrase: It acts as a preposition. এটি Preposition –এর মতো কাজ করে।
In spite of his illness, he attended the examination. Mita shouted at the top of her voice.
